Introduced in the latest trailer for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, Miraidon is one of eight new Pokemon that fans have gotten to see in the upcoming games. A Reddit fan artist who goes by the name va_cao has redesigned the Pokemon Violet box art in the style of the Generation 1 Pokemon games. The fan-made box art features the classic Pokemon logo layered over a design for Miraidon that mimics the franchise’s early art style. Miraidon is surrounded by text and has seen a small redesign to fit the proportions of Game Freak’s original designs. This includes shrinking some of Miraidon’s features such as its chest and head and coloring it a paler blue and yellow.
The specific style of box art va_cao is mimicking is the Japanese box art, noted by the “pocket monsters” text situated at the bottom of the fan art. While this is the most recent piece of fan art va_cao, they have done a piece similar to this but, for Pokemon Scarlet’s legendary Koraidon. Other franchises they’ve created fan art for include The Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy 7, and Shin Megami Tensei 5.
Pokemon fans often have differing opinions on the art style shift seen from Generation 1 to Generation 8. Some prefer the simplistic designs from the early days of the franchise while others enjoy the more intricate Pokemon appearances from the later games. Certain Pokemon, such as the ghost/poison type Gengar, have seen large changes to their general appearance from this stylistic change. This may be something fans will appreciate about va_cao’s fan art as it maintains the detailed elements of Miraidon’s design while streamlining it to match classic Pokemon.
Discussion around Pokemon Scarlet and Violet continues as fans give their opinions on the new Pokemon seen in the newest trailer. While some discuss the possible evolutions the new Pokemon may have, others debate over what role the new legendaries will have in the story. Though with the two new professors, 4-player co-op, and the shift to complete open-world, Pokemon fans have plenty to discuss while they wait for Game Freak to reveal more information on these newest games.
