While free to play, Pokemon Unite has continued to be a major success thanks in large part to its reliance on microtransactions, both through cosmetic items as well as Battle Passes that arrive every so often. Initially, fans were upset that Pokemon Unite felt more like a pay to win style game, where those who spent money had advantages over those who opted not to. Thankfully, updates have quickly fixed this and the game is in a much better state, even if Unite players still have an issue with $40 cosmetic items.

Pokemon Day 2022 has finally arrived and Nintendo had plenty of announcements to share regarding its massively popular franchise. Pokemon Unite seemingly got out ahead of the reveal trailer by announcing that the legendary Hoopa would be the next to be added to the roster, though today’s trailer revealed a bit more on the trickster. Hoopa can teleport itself and any allied players out of battle and back to the base, while it’s unite move turns it into its Unbound version, which gives it new attack moves that chain to nearby enemies.

However, the Hoopa news wasn’t the only announcement for Pokemon Unite. While Hoopa is available to everyone during the Pokemon Day event and can even be unlocked by finishing all special missions, all players will also be getting special trainer cosmetic items for just logging in. There’s a new mode available called Fury, which features faster matches all about battling almost like Team Deathmatch. The segment concluded with a sneak peek at the next roster addition, which is the Steel Dragon type Duraludon.

While the news should satisfy Pokemon Unite players, the big news was reserved for the end of the event, which revealed the next mainline game in the franchise. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet is set to launch later this year and looks to take the series to a location that resembles a destination set in the Mediterranean region like Italy. The trailer also revealed three new starters, a gator that resembles an apple, a duck creature, and a grass cat. Alongside updates to existing Pokemon games like Arceus and Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl, fans should have plenty to keep them busy.

Pokemon Unite is available now for Mobile and Switch.
