Since the game’s launch in July 2021, Pokemon Unite has seen consistent additions to the roster each month with developer TiMi Studios frequently introducing new Pokemon and new ways to experience the MOBA. 2022 has already seen Unite add two popular Generation 6 Pokemon to the roster with Trevenant joining the game in January and Aegislash releasing earlier this month. Now, as part of The Pokemon Company’s ongoing anniversary celebration, Pokemon Unite officially announced the Mythical Pokemon Hoopa as the next creature to join the fight.

A trailer released Thursday morning on the official Pokemon Unite YouTube channel details the game’s newest addition, showing off Hoopa’s moveset. Hoopa’s abilities focus around teleporting itself and its allies around the map with its Hyperspace Hole ability allowing Hoopa and its allies to teleport both back to base and between the game’s goal points. Hoopa’s Unite Move, Rings Unbound, causes Hoopa to transform into its Unbound form and alters its moveset, allowing Hoopa to deal big damage, causing its attacks to hit in an area, and creating a one-time warp point for allies to group up with.
Hoopa’s addition to Pokemon Unite is noteworthy not only due to the Pokemon’s unique moveset focusing around cross-map mobility but also becoming only the second Mythical Pokemon to be added to the game with Zeraora previously being featured at the game’s release. While Zeraora has fallen off on many players’ tier lists since the game’s launch, Hoopa will look to provide a style of gameplay that is wholly unique from other members of Pokemon Unite’s roster with its teleport abilities allowing teammates to escape danger or turn the tide of a fight.
The announcement of Hoopa’s introduction to Pokemon Unite marks the halfway point for the Pokemon Day celebrations, but The Pokemon Company still has plenty planned to come throughout the days leading up to Pokemon’s 26th anniversary. The previously announced schedule will feature announcements for the Pokemon Trading Card Game on Friday and Pokemon GO on Saturday before ending with a “Pokemon Presents” broadcast on Sunday. With Pokemon Legends: Arceus seeing massive success following its launch, the future looks bright for Pokemon moving into its twenty-sixth year.
Pokemon Unite is available now for Switch and mobile devices.
