Go to the Stow-on-Side Pokemon center

To the left of the Pokemon Center in Stow-on-Side, there is an NPC which will give you 2 Fossils. In Pokemon Sword, he gives you Bird Fossils and in Pokemon Shield, he gives you Drake Fossils. These Fossils are not enough to unlock the Pokemon and you’ll have to find additional pieces and the Fossil Professor.

The second piece and Cara Liss

Go to Route 6, just outside Stow-on-Side. You’ll find a professor with a machine and right before you approach her, you can find two pieces of Fossil. In Pokemon Sword, you’ll find 2 Dino Fossils and in Pokemon Shield, you’ll find 2 Fish Fossils. Approach Cara Liss and choose the appropriate combinations to get a new Fossil Pokemon.

Cara Liss will only prompt you to combine Fossil pieces if you have the correct ones. If you don’t have the combination pieces, she’ll just talk about Fossils. That’s how you can know if you have the correct pieces or not.

Fossil Combinations

There are 4 Pokemon you can get with 4 different Fossil combinations.

#1 Bird + Drake = Dracozolt (Electric/Dragon)

#2 Bird + Dino = Arctozolt (Electric/Ice)

#3 Fish + Drake = Dracovish (Water/Dragon)

#4 Fish + Dino = Arctovish (Water/Ice)

The Digging Duo - getting other version Fossil pieces

You can get the Drake and Fish fossils in Sword and the Bird and Dino Fossils in Shield by trading it from the other version. But it is also possible to get them without trading - from the Digging Duo.

You can find the Digging Duo in Bridge Field Wild Area. You’ll have to pay them 500 Watts in order to get them to dig up something for you. They are not guaranteed to dig up the other Fossils as they also dig up random rewards.

Both the Duo brothers dig and find different rewards, but both of them will find you the Fossil items if they get lucky. But they can also turn up without anything at all sometimes.
