At this point, we have no idea exactly how many Pokemon will be featured in Pokemon Sword and Shield, or how they will be numbered in the Galar region Pokedex. That being said, the first trailer for the games did confirm over 30 Pokemon that will be included.

Here are all the Pokemon confirmed for Pokemon Sword and Shield as of the first trailer:

Grookey Scorbunny Sobble Pichu Pikachu Raichu Minccino Cinccino Hoothoot Noctowl Grubbin Charjabug Vikavolt Wishiwashi Deino Zweilous Hydreigon Trapinch Vibrava Flygon Rufflet Braviary Wailmer Wailord Espurr Meowstic Riolu Lucario Larvitar Pupitar Tyranitar Munchlax Snorlax

Out of the 33 Pokemon that were revealed in the first trailer to be in the Pokemon Sword and Shield base games, only three are brand new Pokemon. Those are the starter Pokemon Grookey (grass-type), Scorbunny (fire-type), and Sobble (water-type). At the time of writing, it’s unclear exactly how many new Pokemon will be added to the franchise through the new games, but it was suggested that there will be “dozens” of brand new creatures for players to add to their collection.

It’s also worth pointing out that while not every Pokemon in franchise history will be found in Pokemon Sword and Shield through normal gameplay, players will likely be able to transfer every Pokemon in existence to the new games. That’s thanks to services like the Pokemon Bank, which will store players’ Pokemon to then be transferred to newer games in the series. Therefore, it should be technically possible to “catch ’em all,” regardless of which version players pick up.

It’s also likely that Pokemon Sword and Shield will have the franchise’s usual trading capabilities and possibly even the Wonder Trade feature, meaning players should be able to fully complete their Galar region Pokedex without having to buy both games. Of course, it’s possible Game Freak and Nintendo could be making some changes to how trading works in the new games, so fans will just have to stay tuned to learn more.

Pokemon Sword and Shield will launch later this year, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
