No Pokemon Snap sequel would come until Bandai Namco and Nintendo teamed up to make New Pokemon Snap for the Nintendo Switch, released in 2021. Like its predecessor, New Pokemon Snap earned mostly positive reviews at the time of its release and has sold millions of copies. The game retains the same general concept as the original Pokemon Snap, but with vastly improved graphics, more courses, new characters, and new ways to interact with the game world.

Generally speaking, New Pokemon Snap takes everything from the original game and advances it considerably, which is to be expected with a 22 year gap between releases. However, there is one key way that some fans may feel New Pokemon Snap is lacking when compared to the original Pokemon Snap. This downside was highlighted recently in a Reddit clip shared by user RetroVisionist22, reminding fans of one way that the original Pokemon Snap is superior to its successor.
The clip in question shows a Pokemon Snap player throwing an apple at a Charmeleon who is walking around a lava pit. The well-timed throw sends Charmeleon falling into the lava, but the trauma causes him to evolve into a massive Charizard. This is one of the most memorable moments of the original Pokemon Snap, and there are other examples of Pokemon evolving throughout the game. This idea of solving environmental puzzles to make Pokemon evolve was pretty much entirely removed from New Pokemon Snap, though it still has puzzles of its own without having them revolve around Pokemon evolutions.
Fans were disappointed when they found out that New Pokemon Snap was doing away with Pokemon evolutions, and it remains one big advantage that the original game has over the new one. Luckily, anyone interested in checking out the original Pokemon Snap on their Nintendo Switch should be able to do so in the relatively near future, as the game has been confirmed for the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack.
The Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack is a pricier version of the Nintendo Switch Online service, giving gamers access to some of the most popular Nintendo 64 games ever made. The original Pokemon Snap has been confirmed to be part of the lineup, but a specific release date for it hasn’t been announced at the time of this writing.
Pokemon Snap is available for the Nintendo 64.
