While some Pokemon have cross-generational evolutions, Generation 8 introduced Pokemon that could only evolve if they were a regional form. Some examples include Galarian Farfetch’d, who evolves into Sirfetch’d, but Kanto Farfetch’d is still unable to evolve. It would be surprising if Pokemon Scarlet& Violetfailed to expand on the evolution line of Pokemon from other regions.

8 Kangaskhan

While it’s true Kangaskhan can hold its own in competitive battles, it’s a Pokemon that’s been with fans since the beginning that could use a pre-evolved form. In Generation 6, Kangaskhan was able to Mega Evolve. This allowed the baby Kangaskhan to fight alongside its mother in battle. However, the lore behind the baby Kangaskhan is still a mystery for some trainers, with a few even speculating the baby Kangaskhan could be a Cubone without its skull.

Regardless of these fan theories, being able to fight with just the baby Kangaskhan could make for some interesting battles. Since Kangaskhan is a female-only species, perhaps only female Kangaskhan could evolve while males stayed joeys forever. Alternatively, maybe there could be a branching evolution for male baby Kangaskhans.

7 Delibird

For the longest time, Delibird’s only known move was Present. This is a randomized move that would either damage or heal the opponent. Despite this, some adamant trainers decided to test their luck in Delibird-only runs with having various levels of success. As of Generation 8, Delibird was able to learn moves via TMs/TRs, making it a diverse fighter.

Delibird is a Pokemon from the Kanto region that is in desperate need of an evolution or at least a regional form. With a base stat total of 330, it’s not hard for other Pokemon to outspeed and potentially 1HKO it. With an evolution, Delibird’s stat total could climb well up to the mid-400s. As for what an evolved Delibird would look like, that’s up for fan speculation. Having Delibird evolve would be like giving Farfetch’d its Sirfetch’d evolution back in Galar.

6 Girafarig

It’s hard to tell how a giraffe Pokemon could evolve, but Girafarig is a Pokemon with a unique typing and used by an Elite Four member (Lucian). Thanks to its Normal/Psychic-typing, Girafarig resists Ghost-type moves, something most Psychic-types are weak against. Furthermore, its design is unique. According to the Pokedex entries, the tail on its head has a small brain and keeps watch while Girafarig sleeps. Maybe an evolved Girafarig could have two tails instead of one, or have two heads. The possibilities are endless and far more imaginative than the previously mentioned theories.

Girafarig’s base stat total of 455, and it has a decent Special Attack. However, a potentially evolved Girafarig could give it higher Attack, Special Attack, and Speed. Or it could have a bulkier Defense if it’s a regional evolution.

5 Skarmory

For seven generations, Skarmory was the only bird Steel/Flying-type until Corviknight. With a base stat total of 465 and incredible Defense, Skarmory could prove to be a formidable wall in battle. Its Steel-typing makes it immune to Poison-type moves and strong against Fairy-types.

Skarmory could either gain an evolution or have a pre-evolution. Its Pokedex entry mentions how the wings of Skarmory’s chicks grow hard when they’re scratched by their nest. In the Pokemon series, there haven’t been any sightings of a baby Skarmory. Thus, they could make a Skarmory chick as a pre-evolved form and have it be a Normal/Flying-type. Trainers could potentially evolve it once it learned Steel Wing.

4 Sableye

Until Spiritomb in Generation 4, Sableye was the only Pokemon without type weaknesses. Then the Fairy-type was created in Generation 6, giving Sableye (and Spiritomb) its first and currently only type weakness. Sableye was exclusive to Pokemon Sapphire and has a base stat total of 380. It was given a Mega Evolution which raised that stat average to 480, but as most trainers know, Mega Evolution is not permanent.

Giving Sableye a permanent evolution would make it more sought out in the wild. As it stands now, Sableye is outclassed by Spiritomb in stats and even looks. Even Spiritomb’s base stat total beats out Mega Sableye. Give Sableye the ability to evolve so that it can have higher Defense and Special Defense could give it the endurance it needs against Fairy-type Pokemon.

3 Mawile

Exclusive to Pokemon Ruby, Mawile is essentially Sableye’s counterpart. It could be caught in the same places as Sableye, has the same base stat total, and gained a Mega Evolution for Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire. Since it’s unknown when Mega Evolution is set to return, Mawile would be better off with a permanent evolution instead.

One unique thing about Mawile is its Typing when it Mega Evolves. If Mawile is to get a second-stage evolution, it should keep the Steel/Fairy-type. Design-wise, it falls into the pit of essentially creating a “second Mega Mawile” unless artists get creative with Mawile’s evolution. Alternatively, Mawile could have a regional variant and evolution in Scarlet/Violet.

2 Banette

Here’s another Pokemon that gained a Mega Evolution back in Alpha Sapphire/Omega Ruby. Some players consider Shuppet and Banette to be the opposite of Duskull and Dusclops. However, while the Duskull-line got a third evolution, the Shuppet-line was left in the dust. It had an impressive Attack stat as Mega Banette, but it’s a little odd how Dusclops could evolve into Dusknoir since Generation 4 while Banette did not receive a third evolution.

Banette’s evolution could be obtained similarly to how Dusclops is evolved. Have Banette hold a special item and then trade it to evolve. Banette’s Pokedex entry is rather chilling, so it’d be interesting to see how this Marionette Pokemon could get even creepier once it’s evolved.

1 Dunsparce

Yet another Generation 2 Pokemon that has received no evolution or base stat increases since its debut. Dunsparce is long overdue for…well, just about anything. Its base HP is 100, but its other stats are mediocre with a poor base Speed of 45. Its Normal-typing gives it access to stalling moves like Substitute, but offense-wise, it’s been warming the bench for quite a while now.

Dunsparce is known as the Land Snake Pokemon, but it has a Normal-typing. Its Pokedex entry even makes a note of how it uses its drill-like tail to bury underground. Dunsparce could evolve into a larger snake and gain a Normal/Ground-typing, or maybe it could evolve into a beast that’s reminiscent of the Quetzalcoatl. Despite being a “land snake,” Dunsparce has tiny wings on its back that could allude to a possible dual Flying-type. Whatever the case may be, Dunsparce has some growing to do.

Pokemon Scarlet &Violet is set to release in late 2022.
