The official Pokemon Scarlet and Violet website reveals even more details about Grafaiai, confirming that it is a “moody Pokemon” that likes to be alone. It’s categorized as a Poison/Normal-type Pokemon with the abilities Unburden and Poison Touch. The previously mentioned graffiti gimmick is tied to its poison saliva, as it licks its hands to cover them in poisonous gunk, that it then uses to paint trees. Grafaiai’s saliva attracts bug Pokemon, paralyzing them for it to eat. Grafaiai’s saliva apparently changes color depending on what it eats, but it’s unclear if that is mere Pokedex lore or if it will play a role in the actual gameplay.

The reveal video shows Grafaiai eating berries, and it too remarks on how the Pokemon’s diet changes the color of its saliva. It’s entirely possible that Pokemon Scarlet and Violet players will be able to manipulate Grafaiai’s saliva depending on what they feed it in the game, though fans will have to wait and see on that front.

Something else interesting about Grafaiai is the fact that it is a nocturnal Pokemon. As is the case with most open worlds, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s Paldea region is expected to have a day/night cycle, and so it’s possible trainers will only be able to catch this Pokemon when it’s night. This would be far from the first time that a Pokemon game used a day/night cycle to determine which Pokemon are available at any given time, so it’s certainly within the realm of possibility.

Learning about Grafaiai should tide fans over while they wait for more substantial Pokemon Scarlet and Violet news. As luck would have it, rumors from reputable industry insiders have suggested that a new Nintendo Direct event could be happening in the very near future, and since Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are two of the biggest Switch releases for this year, one has to imagine that they’ll make an appearance at the show.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet launch November 18, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
