When you first boot up Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, you’ll get a nice overview of the Paldea region, then you’ll be introduced to your main character. Your trainer is your avatar within the world of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, and it will play a vital role in your adventures across Paldea, catching Pokemon and exploring the new region.

How to Choose Your Starter Pokemon

Once you start your adventure properly, you’ll need to go through a ton of cutscenes and exposition. After a bit, the director of your school will arrive at your home, introducing you to the three starter Pokemon in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. You’ll get to choose from the Grass-type, Sprigatito, the Fire-type, Fuecoco, or the Water-type Quaxly.

Each one comes with distinct abilities and evolutions that you can take advantage of. But, choosing your starter is not as simply as just picking a PokeBall. Instead, you’ll need to continue playing through the story and make your way over to the house opposite of the street, the one that the director says they are going to when they leave you.

If you’re having trouble finding it, you can always use the minimap on the bottom right-hand side of the screen. This will point you toward a giant exclamation point that you can rely on. If you approach the house, you’ll enter another cutscene, at which point you’ll finally be able to choose your starter Pokemon.

Unfortunately, until this happens, there isn’t actually much you can do in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. As such, you’ll just want to focus on doing what the other characters advise you to do until the game opens up much later.

In the meantime, you can also check out all the Legendary Pokemon in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, as well as take a look at the differences in the two versions for more help in choosing the best version for your wants, as each version comes with its own exclusive Pokemon and Legendaries.
