Releasing on November 18th for Nintendo Switch, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are already the victims of leaks, which players have been latching onto in the hopes of divining new and updated information about the game. Fans are so eager to get more information about the game, but until Nintendo drops more official information, players are content to just build the fandom around the game in creative ways.

One such player, Redditor TimDrawsSTuff, created a piece of art in Adobe Animate that depicts one of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s new Pokemon, Fidough, using the art and animation style of Paper Mario. Fidough is a fairy-type Pokemon and is described as the “Puppy Pokemon,” which is clear from the pun in its name (for the popular dog name, Fido). TimDrawsSTuff cleverly redraws Fidough in the two-dimensional, origami paper style of Paper Mario and even animates the drawing to wiggle and bounce in an adorable manner.

Nintendo 64’s original Paper Mario is still held in high regard for its art style and direction, which makes it a prime candidate for fans and artists as inspiration for their fan art. So, it is no surprise that fans are reimagining Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s Pokemon in the art style of Paper Mario and it wouldn’t be surprising to see more Pokemon drawn in this way in the future. The comments section on this post itself is a testament to how much the fans love this type of crossover art.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet fans are recreating the game’s Pokemon left and right in various different art styles and depicting them in a plethora of imaginative ways. Sometimes, they show them as retro sprites. Sometimes, they draw them like characters in other game franchises. Sometimes, they draw them in a futuristic setting entirely outside of the Pokemon universe.

As the release date for the 9th generation of Pokemon games closes in, fans are looking forward to exploring the new Paldea region and discovering all the new Pokemon that are lying in wait.
