With the release of Scarlet and Violet, two new types of Pokemon were introduced. The first is the Paradox Pokemon, which can have an ancient or futuristic appearance. This group is not very large, but one fan imagined what it would be like to add to the list by drawing a Paradox Torkoal. The second is the Convergent Pokemon, which is when separate species evolve to look like each other due to their environment. One fan showed what a creative shape would look like for Venonat, one of the original 150 Pokemon.

The Instagram profile fakemart posted a fan art showing what a Convergent Venonat would look like, and the idea draws attention to its creativity. Venonat has returned to regional Pokedex after years of absence, but its design remains the same. The little monster has purple fur and a pincer-like mouth, long antennae, and red eyes that resemble a fly. In this fan art, Venonat got white fur, a beak-like mouth, and blue eyes. The antennae are also blue and received a new design. Its feet are still two-toed, except for the bird-like appearance.
Originally Venonat is a Bug/Poison-type, but this Convergent form has been renamed Venowlat, which is an Ice/Flying-type. The reason for the changes is the inspiration found by the artist: the snowy owl, native to the Arctic regions of North America and the Palearctic. It can be observed that the white owl is referenced not only in the look of the character but also in its name and type. Interestingly, although the franchise has multiple Flying-type Pokemon, including owls like Rowlet and Noctowl, Pokemon does not specifically have a snowy owl.
The fan art created by fakemart has been praised by followers and stands out not only for the adorable design but the clever use of reference while taking advantage of a context provided by the franchise itself. Pokemon already has some really creative designs, but fan art like this one makes players imagine the variant types of monsters that could come from the Convergent evolution. It’s something that would have the potential to make Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s gameplay even more interesting and fun, and impact even future games in case this aspect is kept.
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are available now for the Nintendo Switch.
