Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are open world games that let players go off in any direction they wish right from the start. As players explore Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s Paldea region, they have the opportunity to complete three distinct main storylines. The three storylines available to Pokemon Scarlet and Violet players have been categorized as Victory Road, Path of Legends, and Starfall Street.

Victory Road is the traditional Pokemon story about defeating eight gym leaders and becoming the Pokemon League Champion. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet gym leaders can be fought in any order, though players first have to pass a test at each gym before they are allowed to confront the gym leaders themselves. Path of Legends, meanwhile, has Pokemon Scarlet and Violet players teaming up with a researcher named Arven to collect Herb Mystica, special items that are guarded by “titan” Pokemon, essentially larger, more dangerous versions of existing Pokemon.

And finally, Starfall Street is all about the conflict between the Pokemon Scarlet and Violet players and the antagonist Team Star group. Team Star is the Team Rocket-equivalent for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, itself broken up into sub-groups that are spread out across the Paldea region. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet players have to infiltrate their bases and then defeat each Team Star boss to complete that particular storyline.

Besides these main storylines, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet players will have other goals to accomplish as well, like catching every Pokemon in the Paldea region, for instance. And better yet, players can tackle all these challenges with up to three friends. Not only are Pokemon Scarlet and Violet the first truly open world Pokemon games, but they are also the first main series Pokemon games with proper co-op play. It remains to be seen how this will all work, but fans will find out soon enough.

Game Freak is taking some sizable risks with the established Pokemon formula when it comes to Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, and it will be interesting to see how fans react when the games launch later this year.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet launch November 18, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
