The first installments of the ninth generation of Pokemon, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet officially launched on November 18 for Switch. The twin titles, while praised for bringing the long-running franchise into open-world territory, have been plagued with numerous bugs and technical issues since its release, including one that made it appear as if a player fought a Girafarig with their bare hands.

The extremely rare Pokemon Scarlet and Violet moment comes from TikTok user @bennettplayspkmn, who recently posted a clip of the encounter. The player already has an extremely rare Pokemon in their possession - a shiny three-segment Dudunsparce. For those unaware, shinies in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet have a roughly 1 in 4,000 chance of appearing, while the Dunsparce evolution’s encryption constant gives it a 1 in 100 chance of being three segments, leaving the likelihood at 1 in 400,000. As if that wasn’t rare enough, the player encounters a shiny Ditto, creating an astronomically rare scenario for any player.
Chances are the situation has never been seen before, and will likely be something that never happens again, at least not anytime soon. However, this player isn’t the only one to have recently had an unexpectedly rare occurrence with encountering a shiny Pokemon. A different Pokemon Scarlet and Violet player managed to fall on a shiny Eevee after dropping out of the sky. The player jumps off Miraidon into a grassy field, only to literally land on a shiny Eevee, sending the player straight into battle.
While some players have been incredibly lucky in their time with Pokemon Scarlet and Violet so far, others have had the opposite experience. Another player recently posted a hard-to-watch video of them narrowly missing out on the chance to catch a shiny Psyduck. The player sees the shiny Psyduck along the edge of a cliff while stuck in a battle, but the Pokemon disappears by the time the trainer can get to it.
Overall players have been frustrated by Pokemon Scarlet and VIolet’s shinies. Many fans feel that for being as rare as they are, the bulk of shinies hardly have any differentiating features from their standard counterparts. Being so rare and sought after, hopefully Game Freak releases an update patch of some sort to improve its shiny situation.
